For many hospitals and health systems, equipment leasing is a viable option to stay current with ultrasound technology. Leasing enables practices to provide appropriate patient care while conserving cash and remaining flexible. As hospitals and health systems grow and adapt to the ever-changing landscape, leasing grants the flexibility to add or upgrade technology at regular intervals.

The two primary factors that determine a lease price are: equipment cost and the lessor’s equity position. At Meridian Leasing, we offer price benchmarking on new equipment, ensuring the price you’re quoted is at or below market rates. We also provide high quality refurbished equipment with prices up to 40%-60% off the new equivalent. By refurbishing our off-lease equipment, we’re able to take a bigger equity position on your lease. The greater the equity position, the less you pay per month. Both offerings are tailored to reduce the underlying equipment cost, resulting in a lower monthly payment for you.

So how much does it cost to lease an ultrasound? It begins with the equipment price. New systems range between $35,000 and $200,000 depending on make, model, and configuration. Refurbished ultrasounds start as low as $12,000 and go up from there. While the price range may seem large, the upside to this is that there is an ultrasound for every budget. At Meridian, we can help you choose the right unit for the right price.

Ultrasounds are generally broken-down by specialty. The most common specialties are Shared Services, OB/GYN, Cardiac, Urology, and Point of Care. Within each specialty there are a range of systems with varying price points, which bring us to the second categorization: technology level.

Systems are classified as entry-level ($), mid-range ($$), premium ($$$), and flagship ($$$$). The higher-end models are more powerful and come with specialized transducers and applications for specific scans and procedures. Alternatively, entry-level and mid-range ultrasounds may provide better value in point of care and general imaging applications. Your clinical needs will drive the type of system required and your budget will determine the level.

A third categorization is new vs. refurbished. Refurbished ultrasounds offer a great opportunity for cost savings when compared to new. Meridian Select certified refurbished equipment undergo a rigorous seven step process where components are tested, repaired, cleaned, and calibrated before being packaged for delivery. You can receive the same quality as a new machine for significant cost savings.

And finally, the price of the ultrasound machine itself is not the only cost you should budget for:

  • Basic installation is included with most purchases. However, if it is a new platform, your technicians may require applications training. Consider budgeting an additional $1,000-$6,000 for this service.
  • Budget a few hundred dollars for delivery. This is sometimes included in the price, but make sure you ask.
  • Finally, maintenance and service agreements generally run 10%-15% of the purchase price, per year, after the initial warranty.

If you’re looking for an ultrasound machine, the healthcare experts at Meridian Leasing will walk alongside you to help you determine the right machine for your clinical and financial needs.
